T.E.S.T.-Method
The goal of this project was to stop the further decay of “downtown.” After a thorough analysis of the problem and its possibilites and difficulties, which stemmed from planning guidelines and land parcelling and tenure, a structure was developed that consolidated similar-sized modules so that they could accomodate the desert climate. This “patchwork” principle made possible the integration of older, remaing structures by conversion and successive redensification. The largest problem was the building forms, how to keep them relative to the size and style of the surrounding single-family houses, while allowing the residents to express themselves.
This system of modules, also known as the T.E.S.T method, complete with a catalog of different elements and providers and rules regarding the allocations of materials, was developed mainly for dense construction with the following objectives:- to respond to the problems of the lack of craftsmanship and the increase of labor costs within the California building industry.- to cut down on on-site labor- to enable the owners to choose among different options of catalogue building elements in order to create personalized living spaces.- to allow the design to change if the requirements for living change over time
